What is suspense?

Dictionary definition of suspense:
1. A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.
2. A quality in a work of fiction that arouses excited expectation or uncertainity about what may happen.

Suspense is used in all horror films as a key feature to keep the audience entertained and on the edge of their seat. It is the feeling of excited or anxious uncertanity about what may happen.
For example, in a horror movie the main character may be slowly walking down the street, however she thinks that somebody is watching her and therefore keeps turning around to see if she can see anybody. Her actions will create suspense and the viewer will feel anxious about who is watching her and what they're going to do.
